Southwest Alaska Vocational and Educational Center (SAVEC) is a unique non-profit training center designed to provide rapid response training and workforce development. SAVEC's educational training focus is on community, industry and agency needs.
SAVEC, with its education training and service partners, provides students with the unique opportunity to receive occupational training designed to provide them technical job skills. The UAF Bristol Bay Campus accredits SAVEC courses where college credit is applicable.
Southwest Alaska is vast in size – it is 55,000 square miles, or about equal in size to the state of Ohio. The Region has 31 village settlements with approximately 7,500 rural Alaskan residents. Alaskan Natives comprise around 68 % of the population. While it is large in size, the area is not connected by roads. Transportation is almost strictly by air or by slow-moving barges. Many of SAVEC’s students travel by air to attend classes. As a result, SAVEC provides short and intensive training at the Center versus a more traditional approach of quarter or semester-length courses, most training results in immediate employment for the students.
